Hi dear Reader, can you cook? I feel lucky enough to have inherited the good cook gene from my mother and her mother before her.......I absolutely love to cook! Have I told you that before? It hasn't made me immune to disaster though!
I was remembering this morning, as I lay in bed, one particular night, my No 2. son came over for dinner with his girlfriend, now wife. I made, if I remember, a Roast Beef with all the trimmings and it was delicious. For dessert I had made a Lemon Meringue Pie........You should have seen it.....it was magnificent.....beautiful crisp pastry, from a recipe handed down over the generations, thick, luscious lemon filling and a beautiful fluffy, just browned right, Meringue........As I cut into it we were all dribbling at the thought of stuffing that wonderful pie into our greedy little gobs......I put a dollop of double cream on each piece and added a small ball of vanilla ice-cream..........topped with a strawberry........perfection!
No. 2's girlfriend was the first to bite into the dessert.....Her face told me everything.......her mouth, which was smiling in anticipation, now had a grimace on it worthy of a gargoyle! Her eyes disappeared as her face creased up and almost disappeared.........I tasted it and I almost died! It was so sour that it was totally unworthy to eat.....it was worse than eating a raw lemon......My husband, who can eat raw lemons and prides himself on being able to handle 5 of those ridiculous sour lollies in his mouth at one time, (something to be very proud of, I'm sure) couldn't eat it.........I threw it out!....................I had forgotten to put the sugar in it! What a dill! I was mortified!
My sister takes the cake though! When she was studying nursing in Brisbane way back when, we went to stay with her for the weekend..........No. 2 son was only a baby and No. 1 son was about 7. She shared a house with about 3 other people, who we all knew.....Apparently it was her turn to cook tea and we hadn't had that priviledge before, so we were looking forward to it.......Special Fried Rice.....I was impressed....my little sister making Special Fried Rice........She dished it all out!.........There was, including the kids, 8 at the table........It looked wonderful! I was just raising my fork to my mouth when my sister, who had already put her forkful in her mouth, screamed and spat out her rice.......So gross! I thought.....what are you doing? She yelled at us all with great urgency, "DON'T EAT IT!" Why? We all asked......as we proceeded to put our food in our mouths.....We all spat it out! What on earth? It was foul! My sister rushed into the kitchen and came back with the oil bottle......She pointed to it and told us that she had cooked the rice with the oil from this bottle...."So?" we all asked........"It's not oil," she said, "It's dish-washing liquid!" We just laughed our heads off even as we continued to spit out the remnants of the rice still in our mouths combined now with the froth was had formed...........talk about frothing at the mouth! She has never lived that down and never will.......trying to poison us like that!
My husband also considers himself to be a great cook.....his claim to fame is his Cottage Pie......Mince, Carrots, Peas and gravy with Mashed Potato on top and baked in the oven.....Not bad! His other favourite is what he just calls, "Mince". It's Mince, Carrots, Peas and Gravy with mashed Potato to the side, cooked in a pan on the stove.....Not bad! His next favourite thing to cook is Mince on Toast....it's Mince, Carrots, Peas and Gravy, on toast.....Not too bad! His range is very diverse as you can see! He doesn't cook much and if he suggests it, I tell him that I already have something planned......Bless him....he does try, but I like to cook completely healthy meals and I tend to cook something different every night.........although there are a few favourites that I cook a couple of times a month.......
My sons are very good cooks and they were always hanging around the kitchen bench as children, as I cooked, and took turns at licking the bowl or the beaters and I was able to give them the great memories of this that I, myself, had as a child.......I haven't had a disaster from their kitchens, yet!
Trouble is, that now I have given up that "demon drink", I am enjoying cooking more, even though it's only been 4 days, I am sure that I have put on at least 3 kilos......I have swapped one obsession for another!
Oh well.....that's life! (who said that?)
Hi, At 59 I am just finding my feet in the world...So exciting! I have learnt a lot over the years.....gone from being extremely hard up to living a very comfortable life and loving every single minute of it.......My boys are grown up and living good lives themselves and I am so proud of them.......I have the best husband in the world (most of the time anyway....hahaha) and I have 3 dogs who I just adore and they adore me...... I try to live by my motto ......"Be like the sun....let your warmth shine through always"
