Morning dear Reader!...There is a debate going on in the media, both on television and radio, regarding which is the best generation...Baby Boomers, Generation X or Gen Y.....I'm here to tell you that Baby Boomers win hands down......Get over it other generations, we are the best!
I am sick of Gen X blaming Boomers for everything from Global warming to Global financial collapses....they are mamby pamby babies...we grew up tough!.....Our parents were mostly poor and we learnt good values from them, especially our work ethic.....we worked bloody hard and got good jobs. Okay, fair enough, we had heaps to choose from in the late 60's and 70's. We could go from one job to another without a care in the world. We were respectful! We loved the earth and everything in it.....We protested and fought for things like equality between men and women, the Vietnam War, Femininity, you know, burn the bra and all that.....We were amazing! We achieved a lot by protesting....
We also had the best music....Music that even our children love and we still love.....Beatles, Led Zeppelin, (although I heard a Gen X claim them- no honey-I lined up for 4 hours at Festival Hall in Brisbane in 1971, I think, to see them-hey it was the seventies so the year could be 1 either way!), Creedence Clearwater, my very favourite it think, Deep Purple, Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, The Byrds, Janis Joplin, The Animals, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elis, Ike & Tina, James Taylor,. Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, Manfred Mann, Canned Head, Small Faces, Stevie Wonder, Fats Domino, Roy Orbison, Cat Stevens, The Eagles, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, and one of my favourites Queen, just to name a few........We gave the world this music.....We gave the world Woodstock! We gave them the disco! We gave them so much and this music will be enjoyed for many generations to come. What did the others give us? Punk! I mean really! Is punk going to last for untold generations? I think not Gen X....get over yourselves......
Holy Smoke, look at the fashion we gave them as well.....The Mini, the Maxi (I was the first girl in my Year 10 class to have a Maxi skirt-my Mum made it) and Hotpants. Bell-bottom pants, jeans and the T-shirt, Paisley shirts and dresses, Tie-dyeing, Kaftans, Beads and Peace Signs. We wore daisies and assorted flowers. We wore our hair, men and women, either long and parted in the middle or we had big teased hair. We permed our hair to look afro! Unfortunately we also gave the world the Safari Suit but, we won't spread that one around!
We saw man land on the moon, wow!.......We saw mobile phones invented and shrink from telephone book size to pocket size.....we saw the video player, the video camera, colour television, digital cameras, digital television, the internet, Facebook, Twitter, Concord (although that's gone)...we set land speed records and broke the sound barrier. Practically everything we have today, and I am being modest, was invented by a Baby Boomer or produced during Baby Boomers time....Yes Gen x & Gen Y.....you owe us!
Gen X think the world owes them a living.....They saw us achieve our dreams....owning our own home, nice car, sometimes a boat, sometimes an investment property. They thought that when they left school they would get a job that paid them $100,000 per year and not have to work hard for it......They expected to buy the beautiful, big house as their first home. The expensive car as their first car.....They forget that we Baby Boomers worked our butts off, scrimping and saving and going without to achieve all of those things so that we could give them the things our parents couldn't give us......They whinge and whine and it's so damm annoying......One thing though! They do show respect for other people and other people's property but, that's because they were bought up by Baby Boomers, unlike the next generation.
Gen Y! Oh dear! The world not only owes them a living, but everything else as well.....Lazy, dis-respectful, disruptive, egotistical, rude, crude and totally undesirable! I know this is a generalisation and a lot of Gen Y have been bought up with good values and standards but, where the hell are they? I haven't seen one for a while.....I know they must be out there but, they stay well hidden.....Tattoos are the go for Gen Y. They think by disfiguring their bodies with the humble tattoo, which for some cultures has great meaning, that they are fashionable.....Little do they realise that by the time they are 50, those pretty (awful) tattoos will be sagging and faded and they will look like caricatures from some sort of weird twilight zone type circus.....The skulls and flames and other assorted horrible images will become an embarrassment to them.....The poor, poor, deluded fools! I tremor to think that we will leave the world in their hands...Let's hope that the next Gen to follow, I don't know if they have been given a name yet, will go back to the good values that we, as Baby Boomers were instilled with..
I am proud to be a Baby Boomer and I am sad that the generation gap is getting wider and wider......I'll get off my soap-box now and leave you to think about it and let me know if you agree with me......
Hi, At 59 I am just finding my feet in the world...So exciting! I have learnt a lot over the years.....gone from being extremely hard up to living a very comfortable life and loving every single minute of it.......My boys are grown up and living good lives themselves and I am so proud of them.......I have the best husband in the world (most of the time anyway....hahaha) and I have 3 dogs who I just adore and they adore me...... I try to live by my motto ......"Be like the sun....let your warmth shine through always"
