Good morning dear Reader.......It's still raining here on the, once beautiful, now sodden, Gold Coast.....Everyone is completely over it and wondering when it will end.....Goodness me, we are never happy are we? If it's not raining we complain about how dry it is and when it rains we complain because it's too wet.....Human nature!.....We forget just how diverse our weather is here in Australia......
"I love a sunburnt country/A land of sweeping plains,/Of ragged mountain ranges,/Of droughts and flooding rains."
to quote Dorothea MacKellar's words from her poem "My Country" One of my favourite poems. That was first published in 1908!.....We experience destructive bush fires in one state while cyclones are destroying another and yet another state is experiencing severe drought!.....It's been going on for centuries and will continue for centuries to come.....We can't command nature!......I got off the beaten track then, that's not what I wanted to talk about today!
I know that I have mentioned before that I love to read......I am a huge fan of James Patterson! I love his detectives and his plots....So clever....I have read almost every book he has written or co-written. I am a huge fan of his Alex Cross novels and every time I get one, I have to set aside the time to read it, because once I start I, invariably, can't put it down.............I also love Jeffery Deaver, The Bone Collector was so good. Patricia Cornwell, her novels are great and full of forensic facts and good characters although somewhat annoying sometimes. Tess Gerritsen, her books are very, very good and I find it hard to put them down as well! How do they come up with those stories?
I would love to be a writer.....I have written a book but, it's about real life experience, not a story full of intrigue and mystery and clever plots.... I still haven't heard from the publisher I submitted it to so I am now not hopeful that it will be actually published.....I tried to write a murder mystery once! I thought of a very clever opening couple of paragraphs as follows:-
"Esmay was stunned! It just couldn't be possible....her eyes must be playing tricks on her. He was dead! She knew he was dead! He couldn't be here. With the strains of Louis Armstrong's "My Heart", fading into the background, Esmay left the dance.
She was very frightened! She had to get away before he saw her. She quickly ducked out the side door of the dance hall, forgetting her wrap and purse in her haste. As she reached for the door handle of her new car, the latest in the Model T Ford range and her pride and joy, the hammer came down with such brutality her skull shattered. Esmay was dead before she hit the ground."
Now, I was totally impressed with myself writing this. I had decided the setting was the 1920's and that Esmay would die but, that's all I had! No clever plot! No other characters. No reason Esmay died! Absolutely nothing! Couldn't think why she thought someone was dead and was at the dance alive and why that someone killed her.....I still can't! Hopeless! Anything that I thought of was lame to say the least.....No one would want to read anything with a lame plot and a murderer just roaming around killing for no reason.....You must have a good solid plot and good solid characters.....I got nothing!
So I have decided to stick with reading my favourite authors and take myself into the fantasy of their books and be frightened and intrigued by their plots and characters....They make them so real....
I have also decided that I'm happy just talking to you dear Readers about everyday ordinary things here in this blog....I trust that you are happy with that decision too, especially after reading my attempt at murder mystery!
Hi, At 59 I am just finding my feet in the world...So exciting!
